With Peter Rollins

Music Isaac Everett

It is natural for us to look at other people’s beliefs and practices in light of our own and judge them accordingly. By doing this we stand over and above the other. But is it possible for us to create a space in which we turn this approach on its head. Placing ourselves beneath the beliefs and practices of another so as to come to a better understanding of ourselves? Join us as Peter explores the theory and practice of this idea through a sustained reflection upon a group he formed called the Evangelism Project (in which people go to listen to a variety of faith communities in order to be evangelised).
Peter Rollins has been praised as one of the most provocative and thoughtful theologians of our day. An author, lecturer and storyteller, he is renowned for his dynamic and winsome speaking. Rollins is also the founder of Ikon, a faith group that has gained an international reputation for blending live music, visual imagery, soundscapes, theater, ritual and reflection to create what they call ‘transformance art.’ Rollins received his PhD in Post-Structural thought from Queen’s College, Belfast. He is currently a research associate with the Irish School of Ecumenics at Trinity College in Dublin and is the author of the groundbreaking book How (Not) to Speak of God. His most recent work is entitled The Orthodox Heretic and Other Impossible Tales.

Isaac Everett is a musician, songwriter, and liturgist.
He is the
author of The
Emergent Psalter
, a commentary and setting of the
psalms for intimate worship, and has released two albums, available on
Proost, iTunes, and Rhapsody.  He is one of the founders of Transmission,
a Christian community in New York and is a graduate of Union
Theological Seminary.

We Can Do It Together!

by FaithHouseManhattan

We did it! With your support Faith House has been able
to envision and create a unique space where people with different
religious traditions come together for deeper understanding of the
faith,
practices, and culture of “the other.”  Understanding is powerful. It
evokes empathy, it motivates
us to defend others, it makes people dream, it inspires action.
Faith House is about understanding, and understanding affects
everything!

With your support, we have been learning from,
teaching, and networking with a
variety of leaders and communities in the city, around the country, and
the world who have
been encouraged by the work of Faith House.

Faith
House is the only organization I know of that
celebrates and shares the tenets of a variety of spiritual paths with
all who
come through the doors.  Their
programs educate, stimulate, entertain, and delight. Like a pebble in a
pond,
they create ever-growing circles of understanding and acceptance in
these strife-filled
times. ~ Marcia Kelly, Author of 100
Graces: Mealtime Blessings

Experiencing my neighbor’s faith has
inspired me to deepen
my own. ~ Russell Chin, Neurologist

As a member
of a minority faith, I often feel isolated.
Faith House feels like a teacher whose class you never want
to miss, a welcoming community. ~
Valerie H.F.

Faith
House is the down-to-earth, practical and personal
embodiment of what the so-called theological experts hold up as the
ideal of
interreligious dialogue: a place where people can explore the diversity
of
religions while cherishing the real differences of religions. ~ Paul Knitter, Paul Tillich Professor
of Theology, World Religions
and Culture at Union Theological Seminary, NYC

What We’ve Done
& How We’re Growing

Since our launch in September
2008, we have hosted 42 Living Room events led by a diverse range of
guest
hosts who are Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Zoastrian,
Lakotan, Buddist,
Atheist and leaders in the Interfaith Movement, young adults and wise
elders.

Faith House
Manhattan has grown to have a local community of leaders including our
Board of
Directors, “Kitchen Table” team of volunteers, Advisory Council,
hard-working staff and visionary donors.

In a broader online
community, 3,000
people are on our email lists and 300 in our Facebook Group.  Since
January 1, 2010,
we have had 7,500 unique visitors to our website from 123
countries/territories.

This Fall we are going into Year 3! We
are moving from strength to strength. And now is the time when we need
sustaining support from you who
understand how critical laboratories of interdependence such as Faith
House
really are in this times.

With your support, we are aiming to
raise $18,000 by Friday, June 4th to increase our capacity for growth, hire a Community Development Administrator (our second
part-time paid position), and fill our projected budget gap for 2010.
Imagine the difference we can make! If you
have been supporting us we need you to sustain your commitment. If you
have been watching us from a distance, now is the time to get
involved.

Faith House means that people of all faiths have a spiritual home to encounter each other, inspire each other, and join hands to heal the world together. ~ Rabbi Justus N. Baird, Director, Center for Multifaith Education, Auburn Theological Seminary, NY

In the short time since its founding as a creative, courageous experiment in delight for deep differences, Faith House Manhattan has become a respected model for the enterprise of broadening interreligious understanding.  ~ Lucinda Mosher, Christian ethicist in the Anglican tradition who works as a consultant, educator, and author on interreligious matters

Faith House is the rare place Rumi writes about:
“Out beyond ideas of right and wrong there is a field…Let’s meet there”
Faith House is the redemption of the religious idea by life.
Faith House is catching.
Faith House is the modern Tent of Abraham: open and welcoming to all.
Faith House is where the different paths converge in people! ~ John Khabir McGheehan

I come to Faith House because it gives me the opportunity to learn and experience the faith and religion of others without feeling like an outsider. ~ Mairim Pina

As someone who has been “multifaith savy” – and even a multifaith professional – I wondered what Faith House would have to offer me.  I find that the Living Rooms are aptly named – a place to come and be without pretense or need to defend positions. A place for honest and comfortable learning and sharing of faith. ~ Ula Barrack

I come to Faith House to hear and listen to new ideas and meet intelligent people.  Faith House has become part of new source or you can say a fountain of knowledge refreshing my old thoughts about my religion and compromising them with other religions ideas.  It is very valuable to the city for the volunteering they do and we get to know and learn from each other how to do the good thing for our community.  All my love and support.  ~ Ali Mansour

Faith House has come at an opportune time in my spiritual journey. I look forward to every event. It gives me a better understanding of different faiths and their practices, which I believe is important in a diverse community. ~ Miguel Angelo Colmenares

Faith House has made me realize that my fear of other religions is totally unfounded, and in fact utterly stupid. ~ Sam McCash

A beloved story from the Christian scriptures teaches that to “love my neighbor” I first must discover who s/he is, beyond easy definitions.  Faith House opens a living room where neighbors we would never meet sit and eat, each one teaching, and all hearts open.  Thank you to all the staff and planners. ~ Rev. Stephen H. Phelps

A shared hope that in coming together we preserve our unique selves, multiply our possibilities, and by gazing deeply into the Other, nurture the divinity within oneself. ~ Rathi Raja, President of Arsha Vedanta Center of Long Island and the Executive Director of Young Indian Culture Group

Where the world of faith is a house with windows and doors that open, offering sight and access to different beliefs, there Faith House Manhattan offers the light to experience interreligious beauty.~ Fabian Munz

Faith House leaders and their invited guests to the series they organize are experts in the religions they practice. Definitely, they know what they are sharing. The interfaith meetings are a way to cultivate respect, inclusiveness, peace, love and compassion for our neighbors. The mission of Faith House is important in these postmodern times marked by individualism and consumerism because it nurtures our communities with a spirituality that promotes peace and social justice. Faith House gatherings are full of creativity and hospitality is at the center of these sessions. ~ Luz Diaz, Religious Education Office, St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, NY
