Immersion Experience for Musicians, Liturgists, and Worship Leaders
Join a group of thoughtful artists for a challenging three-day immersion in the rich musical diversity of New York City! CONTACT US to learn more!
What to expect: A team of skilled facilitators and long time New Yorkers will guide you through a span of concerts, music club experiences, and religious music rituals of different faith traditions. We will stir your imagination and send you home with your heart, mind, and body. You will show up back home with fresh passion, confidence and a long list of insights, ideas, questions, memories, and new contacts.
Why are we organizing this gathering: liturgical music is a ritual art. Its power is rooted not merely in acts of communication and creation — our words, gestures, symbols and sounds — but in postures of listening and reception. In effective liturgical ritual, we learn to be communally present as listeners, learners, and recipients. This posture, however, can be difficult to attain for those of us who lead congregational song and perform. As featured performers, facilitators, and curators, we can lose sense of what it means to be a guest. Here, we will provide opportunities to be welcomed by communities and music rituals that are perhaps “other” to us. It is an opportunity to climb down from the platform, push back against our reflexive postures of being in the center, and to be welcomed into ritual spaces where we are not in charge. We will participate in secular and religious musical spaces and experiences that embody essential wisdom. We will listen, sing, dance, eat, and converse at the table that is larger than our own lives. And in this time is disorientation and discovery, we may even encounter God in God’s Holy Otherness.
In brief: To be effective “hosts” in our own worship spaces, we need to learn what it means to be guests at other tables. This experience is a welcome to some of the unfamiliar places that God’s grand table encompasses, where we, as guests, might hear the voices of our neighbors resonating the song of the Divine in new ways and be inspired to reimagine the liturgy, art, and music in our home communities.
This experience is for you if you:
- Perform, lead, create, or curate music in the context of spiritual community, organization, or an institution, professionally or otherwise.
- Are student, learner, teacher, or explorer of spiritual experience, theology, religion in the postmodern or urban context, for personal growth or in a leadership capacity.
- You are none of the above and would like to have once-in-a-lifetime experience of music in New York City, with inspiring and fearless group of people.
